Rudy Giuliani has been in the process of rehabilitating his image.
Now, the The Smoking Gun has excerpts from a "vulnerability study" that was commissioned by Giuliani's campaign prior to his successful 1993 City Hall run.
Needless to say, the public airing of this study was not part of the rehabilitation project. The report is chock full of information about
Rudy's various flip flops and naked political opportunism.
It was compiled before his second marriage to Donna Hanover unraveled, so it focuses on another marriage, which the report refers to as Rudy's "weirdness factor." This is a reference to his 14 year marriage to a second cousin, something that is well known to New Yorkers but probably not information the average Republican primary voter has.
The report addresses concerns that Rudy's opponent's will cast him as
anti-abortion rights and anti-woman. The defense to that claim, says the report's authors is that "Giuliani is pro-woman and pro-choice."
It goes on to quote a 1992 New York Post article where Giuliani says:
"I made a terrible mistake on abortion last time. I should have said I was pro-choice and stopped."
Of course, the concern today for the Rudy campaign is that people will cast him as pro-choice, which is why he is repeating history and offering a contorted pandering update to his position where he claims to have always been opposed to late term abortions (not true). Another section goes into detail about Rudy's problem with pro-choice women voters and offers solutions on how he can convince New York women that he's solidly pro-choice. Check it out.
