Patrick O'Connor: Read More: Miscellany
Enough with the Simpsons Okay, the whole Simpsons which-is-the-real Springfield? thing has gone a little overboard in the halls of Congress.

Vermonters predictably trumpeted the selection of Springfield, Vt., as the official home of the Simpsons big screen debut after an online vote last week. And an understandably upset Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) took things a little too far last Friday when he asked Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to intervene.

But freshman Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) officially crossed the line Monday by responding to DeFazio's calls for a Justice Department investigation of the online poll.

"Don't have a cow man!" Welch wrote DeFazio, invoking vintage Bart Simpson vernacular to dismiss the Oregonian's allegations of voter fraud. (DeFazio argued that cows must have voted for Vermont to best Springfield, Ore., the birthplace of show creator Matt Groening.)

If anything, Welch should have taken a shot at DeFazio for plugging Springfield's philandering, notoriously corrupt Mayor, "Diamond Joe" Quimby. Personally, I'm not sure it's wise for an election reform advocate to support such a crooked elected official. But now here I am buying in to the whole charade.

Clearly, these aides have too much time on their hands - and, apparently, so do I to be writing this.
