Obama as speargunner, aspiring fly fisherman
Obama and McCain give interviews to Field & Stream, offering their policy views and their own outdoor credentials. Not too much news there -- both like to hike, McCain's opposed to gun control, and Obama promises to appoint an outdoors type to be Secretary of the Interior.
Lots of fun detail though.
"You know, when you're in the South Side of Chicago, there's not too much-too many opportunities for hunting and fishing," Obama conceded. "When I was a kid, I grew up in Hawaii, and so I would go fishing with my grandfather. And when I got older, actually, we did spearfishing there, which was sort of a combination of hunting and fishing. You know, we would snorkel. I didn't scuba dive at the time, but I would snorkel and [use a] speargun."
He also said he'd loved visiting Montana.
"One way or another, after this presidential process is over, whether--because I lose or because I win--and I've got a little vacation time coming, I'm going to learn how to flyfish, because that land is spectacular," he said.
Also, a lover of moose, recalling a visit to Yellowstone with his mother and sister: "Suddenly coming across just a herd of elk wandering through, or seeing a moose peering out of the woods, out of the marshes: It was magic."
McCain, for his part, took a firmer line on gun rights, opposing the assault weapons ban, but said he doesn't own a gun himself.
He did say he stocks a small pond on his property with catfish.
"We have one catfish who I've hooked at least 10 times who always is able to get to the piling of our little dock and break the line. He must have at least 10 hooks hanging out of his mouth," he said.
