Thompson: Palin may be too coached
Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson thinks Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin may be over-coached by John McCain’s campaign after watching her recent interview preformance with CBS’s Katie Couric.
Asked Thursday morning on Fox if Palin has been over-prepared, Thompson conceded that “it's possible.”
Thompson said there may not have been “enough time” to prep Palin before the campaign made an “attempt to cram down a whole lot in a short period of time.”
“I don't know those things to be true,” Thompson said, “but I know that they are sometimes the mistakes that are made.”
Thompson, one of McCain’s top surrogates on judges, said he wasn’t surprised by Palin’s inability to name a Supreme Court decision other than Roe v. Wade with which she disagrees.
“I think you got the answer there of probably almost 100 percent of nonlawyer candidates if they have not been given a list of cases to see,” Thompson said on CBS’s “Early Show.” “They might ask you about this one and they might ask you about that one.”
“Now, you could say she should have had time to go over that list. And, of course, she will. And she'll have a chance to deal with the whole judicial side of things, which is new to people who are not lawyers,” Thompson added.
But despite the slips, Thompson thinks Palin will hold her own during Thursday night’s debate against Sen. Joe Biden.
“She's going to get back to doing what has worked for her before,” the former Tennessee senator said.
“She's been very successful in this kind of a format before. She's very intelligent. She knows where she wants to go. She's courageous. And the important thing is that after an hour, the American people are going to get to see this. But I think she's going to do fine.”
