The Today show has a segment about who Hollywood would like to cast as President. (Hint: it's an Obama v. Hillary storyline).
Arrianna says Dems want someone "authentic." But can a candidate be too candid? Last time around, there was another Democratic presidential candidate who stole the hearts of those who look to their politicians to make them feel good. His name was Howard Dean. When Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) endorsed Dean, he said:
"There is a powerful authenticity to Howard Dean. With that authentic demeanor, his toughness, his progressive beliefs, and his plain-speaking, he is the Harry Truman of our time."
Authenticity is a myth. Authenticity is a bonus, but it doesn't get you elected. It turns you into a media darling, but it doesn't get you elected.
Would any Democratic primary voter have said that John Kerry was "authentic"? No. And he beat the "authentic" candidate easily in Iowa (pre-scream) and went on to win the nomination.
Obama has plenty of attractive qualities. But if he wins the nomination it will have to be for more than his much-celebrated authenticity.
